Her interactions with James Cagney, who was beyond excellent, are priceless. The story is edgy and rather tragic. Loved Day's singing in this, too! You go Cincinnati Girl!Kimberly J.M. It has been said by many that Cagney was a very generous co-star and that he gave every scene everything he had. I wouldn't be surprised if being paired with Cagney was a major factor in Doris Day's no-holds-barred performance in "Love Me or Leave Me." She really goes toe-to-toe with one of the screen's most powerful actors.

Doris Day had quite a career: an impressive string of hit records, popular films of varied genres (musicals, dramas and those celebrated romcoms that made her queen of the box office). She was one of the great stars of the '50s - '60s and I'm thrilled that you chose to spotlight her amazing star turn as Ruth Etting for the blogathon. What she brings to the role that no one else could, in my opinion, is softness along with the edge, if that makes sense and I think you describe it nicely.

AuroraCitizen Screenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11596338896095275116noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3428647353853444922.post-25596628308180504352014-05-27T15:29:24.209-04:002014-05-27T15:29:24.209-04:00This was only the second Doris Day and James Cagne...This was only the second Doris Day and James Cagney film I saw (I grew up watching her in Calamity Jane and him in Yankee Doodle Dandy) and was completely blown away. She never gets enough credit for being a great actress: I wish she'd done more movies like this.

It's one of those movies I never tire of watching - partly because of the performances and partly because of the wonderful musicAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3428647353853444922.post-86690778210526927582014-05-26T21:44:00.253-04:002014-05-26T21:44:00.253-04:00I've not seen this one – and how come?! Good for you, Doris!

I'm not her biggest fan but I enjoy her most in non musicals. I also got a kick out of Love Me or Leave Me because seeing Cagney in this genre, out of his usual type cast roles is a treat for me.

I wasn't aware it was based on a true story so I'll keep that in mind the next time I get to see it.

An enjoyable review and I agree, Doris didn't get the award nods she deserved.
All the best!
PagePagehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15063277863578004836noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3428647353853444922.post-63157012791472568312014-05-26T12:29:38.310-04:002014-05-26T12:29:38.310-04:00Really enjoyed your look at Doris Day here, who is...Really enjoyed your look at Doris Day here, who is underrated as a dramatic actress (and she is EXCELLENT in The Man Who Knew Too Much). Can't believe that Ruth Etting thought Jane Powell would have been a better choice - that's a might-have-been scenario I find mind-boggling! grandoldmovieshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10773085288675763855noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3428647353853444922.post-57080345988715783082014-05-26T09:19:30.092-04:002014-05-26T09:19:30.092-04:00Dramatics aside, as a Doris Day fan I'm please...Dramatics aside, as a Doris Day fan I'm pleased that she had the opportunity to record those great old songs and I cherish the soundtrack album.

Doris' snub by the Academy is still a head shaker.
